In this story we wanted to analyze the particular kind of isolation found in Aotearoa's bush. There is a national character of the "kiwi" of New Zealand brought on by the extreme isolation from the world; colonists living on a pacific island near Antartica, in a manner more traditional to the UK than that of the native of Aotearoa.
We chose a remote location that gave us unlimited access to very wild forest, and we had an actor willing to go to extremes such as starvation, and sleeping outside under the stars for days. This brought out the delusion which comes from being alone, in the bush, where the voices in the head become louder.
We managed to create on film a very moving story that brought to light a very real New Zealand mood and struggle. The film portrayed a mental illness, battle with ones dark side and an insight into what life can be like for humans who live outside of society. Under the Earth was considered for contention in the New Orleans Film Festival 2016.
